In downtown Denver, a $4.7 billion redevelopment of Union Station will create a bustling urban center and multimodal transit hub that integrates light rail, commuter rail, Amtrak, and bus service, as well as new private development and public spaces.

The project is already taking shape with completion of its first phase: Light Rail Plaza, which comprises the new light rail station plus 40,000 square feet of outdoor plaza space.

To provide a pleasant experience for daily commuters, the plaza includes nine teardrop-shaped bench planters that incorporate softscape, shade plantings and seating while channeling pedestrian traffic and limiting vehicular access. Underlit with iLight Plexineon White 1X Series linear LED luminaires, the planters also add drama to the dynamic new public realm after nightfall.

PNC Bank is pushing to expand its geographic footprint beyond the eastern part of the country.

As part of that growth strategy, 159 new PNC branches across 15 states and the District of Columbia feature iLight’s Plexineon Blue Series fixtures as a key design element, helping PNC achieve its goal to be both sustainable and recognizable.

With glass curtains on three sides and a $6 million collection of public art, the new $1 billion main terminal at Sacramento International Airport aims to create a memorable gateway to California’s capital region, besides positioning the airport for future growth.

In keeping with that goal, iLight Plexineon White 2X 4500K fixtures were chosen to provide both energy-efficient illumination and a design element. Installed on the undersides of escalators that span three levels and run overhead, the LED fixtures also frame the terminal’s signature feature: a suspended, 56-foot-long aluminum sculpture of a red hare diving into a suitcase.

Unveiled in October 2011, Lenfest Plaza at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in downtown Philadelphia provides a streetscape identity for America’s oldest art museum and school — and a gateway for the city’s art scene.

The new open-air gathering space previously was a neglected, half-block-long alley that bisected the school campus. Today it’s an outdoor gallery as well as a bustling pedestrian plaza. Giving the campus cohesiveness while creating linkages to Philadelphia’s “Museum Mile” and the newly constructed Pennsylvania Convention Center, the plaza features an iconic permanent public art installation, rotating student exhibitions and temporary sculpture, plus a stage, plantings, and tables for outdoor dining.

Connecting those elements is a custom, three-part serpentine bench that is underlit with iLight Plexineon White 2X Series fixtures. Besides adding a safety element, the Plexineon gives off a glow that arouses curiosity, drawing people along the narrow space and creating an inviting aura.

Against the night sky in Redmond, Wash., an electrical transmission tower stands out in a surprisingly beautiful way. Thirteen rings of LED light encircle the tower, illustrating the sequence of the Kelvin scale, which expresses the color temperature of light: red at the bottom, moving through orange, yellow, warm white, then cool white, and, finally, blue at the top.

The rings are actually iLight Plexineon fixtures, and they are integral to making a potential eyesore a dynamic visual landmark — especially after dusk when the fixtures are programmed to create a sense of electricity moving up the pole.
